Alphonsine Fournaise dit jadis A la Grenouillère

Portrait of Alphonsine Fournaise is a painting by the French painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, painted in 1879 and housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The young woman depicted is Alphonsine Fournaise, the daughter of Alphonse, the owner of a prosperous restaurant on the island of Chatou, whom Renoir photographed on the same terrace where he was to paint Le Petit déjeuner des rameurs the following year. Alphonsine's carefree, smiling face appears in many of Renoir's paintings, including Femme en bleu (1879-1882), Femme à l'éventail (1880) and Jeune femme souriante (1880). The work passed through the collections of Victor Chocquet, Durand-Ruel, Maurice Sulzbach and M. D. David-Weill, and was dedicated to the museum in 1937, when it was transferred to the Musée du Louvre, before finding its definitive home at Orsay in 1986. The portrait of Alphonsine Fournaise is animated by an extraordinary mobility of light, played out by the refraction of coloured sparks on the different forms represented. Alphonsine's physiognomy is completely disrupted by the effects of light. Renoir was firmly convinced that the colour of an object is also determined by the amount of sunlight that strikes it: this is why the girl's hair is not dark, but dyed a colour that oscillates between brown and red. In this work, space is cancelled out by the flatness of the pictorial material, which doesn't bother to define the different shapes volumetrically.
