Balthazar Castiglione

The Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione is an oil painting on canvas measuring 82 × 67 cm by the Italian painter Raphael. Between 1513 and 1516, Baldassare Castiglione befriended Raphael, who painted his portrait with great friendly care. Raphael painted two portraits of his friend, in 1516 and 1519, and it is probably the latter that forms the one in the Musée du Louvre. "This portrait remained in the collection of the Duke of Urbino (1631) before joining that of Cardinal de Mazarin and then passing into the collection of Louis XIV. Baldassare Castiglione was born in 1478 into a very old and very noble Lombard family allied to the Gonzagas of Mantua. After living in Rome in a highly cultured environment, he moved to the court of Urbino, which at the beginning of the 16th century was the most refined in Italy. It was there that the great lord met the painter, of whom he wrote in his Book of the Courtier, one of the most famous books of the Italian Renaissance. Castiglione had begun his diplomatic career with a mission to England in 1506, but it was above all as representative of the Duke of Urbino to Popes Julius II and then Leo X that he distinguished himself. Towards the end of his life, he was sent by Clement VII to Charles V, who held him in high esteem, and he died in Spain. A friend of Raphael, author of the Livre du courtisan published in 1528, the model is the embodiment of the accomplished gentleman and perfect courtly gentleman described in the latter work.
