La balançoire

The Swing was painted by Auguste Renoir in 1876. This oil on canvas depicts several figures, including a woman standing on the seat of a swing. It is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The painting depicts a conversation between a man with his back to a woman standing on a swing. The two figures are observed by a little girl and a man leaning against a tree. The painting gives the viewer the impression of overhearing a discussion, like a photograph where time has stopped. This sensation is reinforced by the direction of the gaze towards the man from behind. The young woman is looking down, rather embarrassed. Renoir used Edmond Renoir, the painter's brother, the artist Norbert Gœneutte and Jeanne Samary, a young woman from Montmartre, as models for this painting. In the same year, Renoir painted Bal du moulin de la Galette, an outdoor scene with a similarly light-hearted atmosphere. The three models from La Balançoire can be found in this painting. In the foreground are the young woman, the man from behind, the little girl and the man leaning against the tree. In the background, the vanishing point draws the eye towards a group of people. The whole painting is constructed along several vertical lines: those formed by the figures, the ropes of the swing and the trees. The swing was shown at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877.
