"La dame au gant" is the title of a painting by Carolus-Duran. This life-size portrait of the artist's wife, Pauline Croisette, was a great success at the 1869 Paris Salon, where it was awarded a medal. For Carolus-Duran, it was the start of a brilliant career as a portraitist of the Parisian beau monde. Today, the painting is part of the Musée d'Orsay collection in Paris. Carolus-Duran painted his wife in a black silk dress adorned with lace. The black is interrupted only by a red rose as a bodice, white cuffs, gold earrings and a yellow rose in her hair. Pauline Croisette is wearing grey gloves that she is in the process of removing; one is already on the floor. This glove is highlighted by the artist's signature. The wall in the background is divided in two by a decorative frame, visible only on the right-hand side. This frame beautifully reflects the lace decoration on the dress. Both parts of the wall are painted in subdued shades of black and grey, so that nothing distracts from the figure being depicted;'" The influence of Velázquez, whose work Carolus-Duran had become acquainted with during a trip to Spain in 1866-67, is clearly visible in this painting. He shared his admiration for the Spanish master with his friend and model Édouard Manet, who produced similar paintings, such as Lady with a Parrot.
