Le balcon

Le Balcon was painted by Édouard Manet and exhibited at the 1869 Paris Salon. The painting features Berthe Morisot (left), who became Manet's sister-in-law in 1874, and the painter Antoine Guillemet. The painting, inspired by Francisco Goya's Majas on the Balcony, was produced at the same time and with the same intention as Déjeuner dans l'atelier. The three figures, all friends of Manet, seem to have nothing to do with each other: while Berthe Morisot, on the left, is the unapproachable romantic heroine, the young violinist Fanny Claus, wife of his friend the painter Pierre Prins, and the painter Antoine Guillemet seem to inhabit a different world. The aggressive, bold green of the balcony also attracted a lot of attention, as can be seen from the article devoted to the work in the Grand dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle in 1878: - Tome XVI, p. 281." The painting was bought by Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894) in February 1884 for the substantial sum of 3,000 francs, in Manet's studio, after his death.
