Au XIXe siècle, les autoportraits sont courants puisque tous les peintres se sont déjà essayés au moins une fois à cet art. Ici, Delacroix nous offre une œuvre où la figure de l’artiste, lumineuse, semble se détacher du fond où un camaïeu de bruns s’illustre, un peu à la manière de Rembrandt. Cet éclairage naturel qui frappe le visage de l’artiste, qui met en valeur son regard sévère et franc, permet de donner une certaine forme de prestance et d’autorité au chef de fil du courant romantique.
