The Lady with the Hermine

The Lady with an Ermine is a 54 x 39 cm oil painting on wood panel created by Leonardo da Vinci in Milan in 1488. Long owned by the Czartoryski family, it has belonged to the Polish state since the end of 2016. In 2014, advanced techniques made it possible to establish that the painting had been repainted twice by its creator, in addition to other minor alterations. Despite the damage it has suffered over the centuries, it remains in a much better state of conservation than many other paintings by Leonardo da Vinci. The painting was acquired in 1798 by Adam Czartoryski for his mother, Princess Izabela Czartoryska, and became part of the Czartoryski family collections in 1800. Between 1830 and 1876, it hung in the Hôtel Lambert, the seat of liberal-aristocratic Polish immigration to Paris and the property of the Czartoryskis, before returning to Poland, in Krakow, to the new Czartoryski Museum. In 1914, Princess Maria Ludwika entrusted it to the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden. It was returned in 1920, then seized by the Germans in 1939 and sent to the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin. In 1940, Hans Frank, Governor General of the Polish lands not incorporated into the Reich, asked for it to be returned to the city of Krakow and subsequently hung it in his offices. At the end of the Second World War, it was discovered by Allied troops in Frank's house in Bavaria.
