The Braque Triptych (or Braque Family Triptych) is a portable altarpiece painted in oil on oak panels, created around 1452 by the Flemish primitive artist Rogier van der Weyden. When open, it comprises three panels depicting Saint John the Baptist on the left, Jesus Christ in the centre surrounded by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist, and Mary Magdalene on the right. When closed, the panels represent a memento mori, with a skull on the left and a cross on the right, or a reference to the Adam's skull at the foot of Christ's cross (the new Adam) and to this one. The most likely hypothesis is that the triptych was commissioned by Catherine de Brabant in memory of her husband, Jehan Braque of Tournai, who died suddenly in 1452. It is the only surviving private devotional work by van der Weyden. The altarpiece is currently on display at the Musée du Louvre in its original oak frame. Because of its fragility, it is protected by a glass case, which also makes it possible to show both sides to the public. Most of the time, the triptych would remain closed, preserved in a case, and show the viewer the reverse of its outer panels, the one on the left dedicated to Jean (or Jehan) Braque (or Bracque), the one on the right to Catherine de Brabant, his wife. Each of the two shutters opens onto a niche painted on a black background, bordered by a frame of jointed brown bricks.
