Adam and Eve driven from Eden (Italian: Cacciata dei progenitori dall'Eden) is a fresco painted by Masaccio in 1424-1425: it appears on a pilaster in the Brancacci Chapel in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence. In 1424, Felice Brancacci, a politician and wealthy Italian merchant, commissioned two young painters, Masolino and Masaccio, to paint a series of frescoes to decorate the walls of the chapel he owned in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence. It was in this context that Masaccio began work on the fresco Adam and Eve Driven from Eden. In 1670, changes were made to the layout of the frescoes in the chapel: carved and gilded wooden frames divided the two levels of frescoes by four. It was at this time (during the reign of Cosimo III de' Medici, known as "the Fanatic") that the leaves were added to conceal the nakedness of Adam and Eve, in accordance with a literal reading of the texts ("And he and his companion sewed themselves loincloths of fig leaves as soon as their eyes were dry, and they made themselves girdles of them. - Genesis, III, 7) also in the two frescoes of the Temptation by Masolino and the Expulsion from the Garden by Masaccio.
