Bacchus

Bacchus is a painting attributed to Leonardo da Vinci or his workshop. Currently housed in the Musée du Louvre in Paris, it is thought to have been painted between 1510 and 1515, but it would appear that it was in fact produced by an unknown disciple of Leonardo da Vinci, probably from his workshop. Lombard painters to whom this work may have been attributed include Cesare da Sesto, Marco d'Oggiono, Francesco Melzi and Cesare Bernazzano. The painting depicts a man with garlanded hair and leopard skin, seated in an idyllic landscape. His right hand is pointing to a thyrse, which he is holding in his left hand. It is highly likely that the Italian painter Salai served as his model. The painting originally depicted John the Baptist. At the end of the 17th century, between 1683 and 1693, it was repainted and modified to depict [...]
