Berthe Morisot à l'éventail

Berthe Morisot à l'éventail is a painting by the French painter Édouard Manet, produced in 1872 and housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Berthe Morisot was a woman who made a tumultuous entry into Manet's private life and studio. Indeed, the painter's artistic autobiography is peppered with paintings of his young friend, who is exalted in Berthe Morisot au bouquet de violettes, where she appears adorned with a bouquet of violets, or in Berthe Morisot à l'éventail, a painting intended for domestic use (it was not intended for the official Salon) and for that reason extraordinarily spontaneous. In this painting, Manet gives us an intimate moment spent with Berthe, who appears wearing an elegant black dress and a pair of light-coloured shoes. The young girl hides her face with a fan, but the lower part of the fan reveals her eyes: the object only partially hides Berthe, and in this way Manet re-establishes a palpable complicity with his young friend, whom he depicts only in essential features, forgoing secondary details. Berthe Morisot with the Fan is a very skilfully calibrated chromatic and structural framework, showing great speed of execution. The black impasto of Morisot's dress stands out violently against the monochrome red background, lit by artificial light that also floods the young girl's face, creating a nocturnal, unnatural and almost fairytale-like effect.
