Chez la modiste

Chez la modiste is a pastel on paper by the French painter Edgar Degas. The work dates from 1882 and is currently in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The pastel measures 70.2 x 70.5 cm. Degas, who considered himself a realist, liked to depict everyday things in his paintings. He therefore drew a great deal of inspiration from his life as an aristocratic Parisian and that of his friends. In this way, he highlighted life in the cafés and shops of the capital, as well as the horse races that he often frequented. This work depicts a visit to a milliner's shop. In fact, there is a whole series of works on this theme. The woman in the painting by Edgar Degas is Mary Cassat. Cassat was a painter and printmaker from the United States.
