Claude Renoir jouant

Claude Renoir jouant is a painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, painted in 1905 and housed in the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris. The painter's third son, Claude Renoir, known as Cocó, was born in 1901 and is most often depicted in the artist's paintings, probably because he was the youngest. Here, he must have been four or five years old, as there is a painting very similar to this one, dated 1905 (written Cocó), in which he wears the same red dress. Renoir liked to paint the different members of his family involved in their daily activities. Jean Renoir remembers his father's love for the little boys in this painting, which passed through the hands of his eldest son, Pierre, to Claude, the youngest (according to the Marxist Ambroise Vollard, all these toys were always hidden on the floor outside the painter's studio). Playing with his toy soldiers, Cocó, distracted, seems unaware of his father's presence. The little boy, captivated by his games, is wearing a red shirt with white polka dots, creating an admirable play of colours with the green of his hair and shirt, the pink of his skin and the green and white of his toys. The modelling of Cocó's figure is made more beautiful by the lighting, recalling the Impressionist years when light and colour were the determining elements in the composition. The result is an intimate scene captured with the candour and tranquillity usual in Renoir's earlier works. The angle of vision is that of a right-handed adult observing the child. The [...]
