Creation of Adam

The Creation of Adam is one of nine frescoes inspired by the Book of Genesis, painted by Michelangelo on the central part of the ceiling vault of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Museums in Rome, commissioned by Pope Julius II. It is the fourth story in this series of nine, preceded by The Separation of Land and Water and followed by The Creation of Eve. Although mentioned relatively early in Genesis, and therefore in the sequence of frescoes adorning the vault, The Creation of Adam was not completed by Michelangelo until late, around 1511, whereas the central vault was executed between 1508 and 1512. The Creation of Adam is an illustration of the biblical text from the Book of Genesis: 1, 26-27: "God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him". The work is particularly famous for the detail in which God's index finger, touching Adam's without touching him, gives life to Man. It is the most famous episode in the Sistine Chapel and one of the most famous and celebrated icons of universal art, the subject of countless quotations, tributes and parodies. To paint the vault, Michelangelo began with the bays near the entrance door, the one used for the solemn entries into the chapel of the pontiff and his entourage, and finished with the bay above the altar. Halfway through the work, in 1510, the scaffolding was dismantled in the first half of the chapel and rebuilt in the other half in autumn 1511.
