The artwork

Eliezer et Rebecca

The painting was commissioned by Jean Pointel, a Parisian silk merchant and banker who was a great lover of paintings, particularly those by Poussin. According to Poussin's biographer André Félibien, it was painted between 1647 and 1649, while Poussin was in Rome. Jean Pointel is said to have commissioned a painting inspired by Guido Reni's The Virgin Sewing Among Her Companions (Hermitage Museum), which had recently been acquired by Cardinal Mazarin. As soon as the painting arrived in Paris, it met with great success. Félibien reported: "You and I went to see it with a lady of our acquaintance who was so charmed by it that she offered to give Sieur Pointel whatever he wanted for it. But he had such a passion for his friend's works that, far from selling them, he would not have wanted to deprive himself of them for just one day. Eliezer and Rebekah, also known as Eliezer Gives Abraham's Gifts to Rebekah, was painted around 1648-1649 by Nicolas Poussin. It is kept in the Musée du Louvre in Paris, France. In 1660, when Pointel died, he owned 21 paintings by Poussin, including the present one, estimated at 1,200 livres according to the after-death inventory drawn up by the painter Philippe de Champaigne. It was probably acquired the following year by the Duc de Richelieu when the Pointel collection was dispersed. It was acquired by the king along with twelve other paintings by Poussin in December 1665 (including The Seasons) and has remained in the royal collections ever [...]
