Embarquement pour Cythère

In 1718, Watteau himself produced a substantially different replica, entitled Embarquement pour Cythère, which belonged to Frederick II of Prussia and is now on display at Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin. Le Pèlerinage à l'île de Cythère (Pilgrimage to the Island of Cytherea) is a painting by Antoine Watteau, produced in 1717 and presented by the painter as a reception piece for the Royal Academy of Painting. He was accepted into the Académie, which created the genre of the fête galante especially for him. The painting is now on display in the Louvre. In ancient times, the island of Kythera, located in the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea, was home to a temple dedicated to Aphrodite, the goddess of love: the goddess is said to have been born in its waters. The island is therefore a symbol of the pleasures of love. Foreground: Couples prepare to leave, a statue of Aphrodite stands in front of some trees. Second shot: The procession continues. Background: The left-hand side is invaded by the blue of the sea and sky and the pink of the distant mountains.
