Femmes d'Alger dans leur intérieur

Femmes d'Alger dans leur appartement is a very famous painting by Eugène Delacroix, painted in Paris in 1833. The painting was exhibited at the Salon of 1834 and acquired by the Louvre the same year. A synthesis of Orientalism and Romanticism, this painting expressed a profound "melancholy" for the poet and art critic Baudelaire. The painting depicts three young women in steamy, richly embroidered interior costumes, lit by the soft light of a window on the left. Lying or sitting on a carpet around a hookah and a kanun, they are lounging on cushions on the floor. A black woman, probably a servant, is wearing a short blue jacket. She is getting ready to leave. Behind her, hanging on the wall, the words "Mohamed rassoul Allah" are inscribed on a blue and white earthenware panel, suggesting a Muslim interior. The sumptuous decor of the harem or gynaeceum is made up of hangings and carpets, Murano glassware above the half-open red cupboard, and earthenware-covered walls decorated with a gilded floral motif bathed in chiaroscuro. The women's faces express the voluptuous languor attributed to Oriental odalisques. They are dressed, in the fashion of Algiers, in shirts made from fine white, plain or floral fabrics, or with matt or shiny textures. Worn open-fronted to the knees, they conceal the tops of short, loose-fitting, satin and brocade serouels, fastened at mid-calf with leggings.
