In Grey (German: Im Grau) is an oil painting on canvas by the Russian artist Vassili Kandinsky in 1919.
After Germany declared war on Russia in 1914, Kandinsky returned to his homeland. Between 1917, the date of the Russian Revolution, and 1919, Kandinsky did not create any paintings, as he had no financial means and was busy cataloguing works of art for the Bolshevik regime. When he returned to painting, his works showed a simplification of forms and a more comprehensible structure. En gris is a painting dominated by colours, and we can see that the shapes have more defined limits, tending to be geometric. These new representations are perhaps a response to the avant-garde of Russian artists such as Kazimir Malevitx and Alexandr Rodtxenko.
