Consummatum est, also known as Golgotha or Jerusalem, is a painting by Jean-Léon Gérôme, produced in 1867. It is exhibited in Paris at the Musée d'Orsay. The title is a reference to Christ's last words before dying, Consummatum est ("All is accomplished"). The Romantic artist chose an unusual way of treating this subject, since all we can see of the Crucifixion is its shadow. The painting is divided into three planes. The first shows Mount Golgotha and the shadows of the three executed on the cross: Jesus, the good thief and the bad thief. In the second, the crowd that had come to witness the scene moves away through the vegetation to return to the town in the background, under a darkening sky. This is an original depiction of the Crucifixion of Christ. The painting was exhibited at the 1868 Salon, where it was severely criticised. The composition, which resembled a cinematic out-of-frame image, baffled viewers at the time because it was too far removed from traditional iconography. The composition of the image simultaneously confuses the viewer and makes them participate in what is happening, as if they were standing under the crosses, symbolising their belonging to the universe and their involvement in a truly cosmic event. At the same time, Émile Galichon noted that "no one can boast of having Mr Gérome's photographic eye and of possessing, to such a high degree as he does, the gift of observation and the ability to translate the impression received".
