La Rue Montorgueil à Paris fête du 30 juin 1878

Rue Montorgueil was painted by the Impressionist painter Claude Monet on 30 June 1878, to mark the bank holidays for "peace and work" and the closing of the Paris Universal Exhibition, in a symbolic gesture promoted by the French republican state to rebuild after the humiliation of defeat at the hands of Prussia in 1870. The vivid colours and profusion of French flags strongly convey the festive atmosphere of the day. The painting can be compared with La Rue Mosnier aux drapeaux, a much more melancholy work by Édouard Manet, but painted on the same subject and on the same day. The two works were based on the common artistic theme of the street decorated with flags. Monet painted this picture while strolling around Paris looking for subjects to paint. He had returned to the capital for the birth of his son Michel, and was concerned about the state of his son's mother Camille's health. The painting shows the painter's attraction to flags fluttering in the wind. - Claude Monet On the same day, and in similar circumstances, Monet also painted the neighbouring rue Saint-Denis under a flag, a picture now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, with the words "Vive la France" on a banner and "Vive la Rép[ublique]" on a flag.
