The Virgin of the Rocks (Italian: Vergine delle rocce), sometimes called The Virgin, the Child Jesus, Saint John the Baptist and an Angel, refers indistinctly to the two versions of a painting by Leonardo da Vinci intended to occupy the central part of the altarpiece of the Immaculate Conception, which no longer exists. The first version - now in the Musée du Louvre in Paris - was created between 1483 and 1486 and was refused by the commissioner of the work"; the second, painted in two stages, between 1491 and 1499 and then between 1506 and 1508, was actually exhibited in the altarpiece before moving to the National Gallery in London at the end of the 19th century, where it remains to this day. While the painting in the Louvre is known to be by Leonardo da Vinci, the attribution of the one in London is disputed: in particular, it could have been painted by Giovanni Ambrogio de Predis, under Leonardo's direction. The two paintings are essentially similar in their general conception, but differ in certain compositional details and in the way they are executed". The work narrates the meeting between Mary, the infant Jesus and Saint John the Baptist in the haven of a cave during the episode of the Holy Family's flight into Egypt, at the time of the massacre of the Innocents. It also features an angel - probably Uriel - who is traditionally associated with John.
