L'Adoration des bergers

The Adoration of the Shepherds is an oil painting on canvas by the French painter Georges de La Tour, painted around 1645 and now in the Louvre Museum in Paris. It is one of the most frequently depicted themes in the history of art, not only by painters such as Caravaggio, El Greco and Giorgione, but also by sculptors such as Damián Forment. In the 17th century, Caravaggio's painters developed a rich tradition of this type of adoration, transforming it into a candlelit nocturne. It is based on the episode in Luke's Gospel in which the shepherds, after receiving the message from the angels that the Messiah had been born, went to Bethlehem to confirm the news. The scene is depicted in very realistic twilight, brought about by the light of a candle held in the hand of Saint Joseph. The shepherds, a woman, Mary and Joseph surround the Christ Child. A lamb is chewing on a twig from the leaves offered to the Child. There is no donkey or ox. The shepherds are dressed in the painter's contemporary clothes.
