Le Débarquement de Cléopâtre à Tarse

The port with Cleopatra landing at Tarsus is a painting by the French Baroque painter Claude Lorrain. It measures 117 cm high and 147.5 cm (+20) wide, and is painted in oil on canvas. It was painted in 1642 and is in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (INV no. 4716). Claude Lorrain was a French painter who settled in Italy. He belonged to the Baroque period and was part of the movement known as Classicism, in which he excelled at painting landscapes. In his work, he reflected a new concept of landscape painting based on classical references - the "ideal landscape" - which reflects an ideal conception of nature and of the artist's inner world. This approach to landscape gave it a more elaborate and intellectual character, making it the main object of the artist's creation, the embodiment of his conception of the world, the interpreter of his poetry, which is evocative of an ideal and perfect space. The painting was commissioned by Cardinal Angelo Giori, one of Pope Urban VIII's closest collaborators. This is perhaps why the Barberini family coat of arms appears in the painting - Pope Urban's secular name was Maffeo Barberini. Giori commissioned eight works from Claudio between 1638 and 1643, and by 1683 it was the property of Louis XIV, who placed it in the Palace of Versailles. In 1785, it moved to the Louvre. The canvas underwent two additions of 10 cm to the right and left in 1695. It forms a pair (pendant) with Landscape with Samuel Consecrating David King of Israel (1643, Musée [...]
