Le général Bonaparte

The Unfinished Portrait of Bonaparte (also known as Le Général Bonaparte) was painted by Jacques-Louis David in 1798, and was intended to depict Napoleon Bonaparte on the Rivoli plateau, holding the Treaty of Campo-Formio in his hand. The live portrait was never completed. Vivant Denon cut out the canvas to leave only the painted part of the face and bust. The painting is on display at the Musée du Louvre. Painted in the Louvre in the Horaces studio between December 1797 and April 1798. Acquired by Vivant Denon who had it cut up, the painting was bought by Maret duc de Bassano in 1826. The painting remained in the family until the 1930s (last owner: Countess de Viel Castel, née Maret de Bassano). The work was then sold to Germain Seligman, the last buyer being the collector Carlos de Beistegui. Donated to the Louvre in 1942 by the Beistegui donation, subject to usufruct, it became part of the national collections on the donor's death in 1953. The face of Bonaparte stands out against a background of apprehensive canvas. He is looking to his right, his eyes slightly raised. His light-coloured, medium-length hair is swaying in the wind. The body suggests that the general is wearing a dark blue uniform, with only the upper torso painted"; the red collar and black scarf are also discernible. The rest of the body is drawn in Cassel clay. Bonaparte places a fist on his right hip, the other hand is placed on his chest, and a scarf can be seen encircling his waist. The painting is [...]
