L'homme au gant

The Man with the Glove is a painting by Titian, dating from the period 1520 to 1523, housed in the Musée du Louvre. The signature "Ticianvs f." appears in cartellino in the form of an incision cut into the block of marble. Although still emblematic of Titian's original style, this work is representative of his transition to his mature style. Originating from the Gonzaga Gallery in Mantua, this work passed, along with the most precious pieces, to Charles I of England in 1627. After the king's execution, it was sold at auction and bought by the banker Everhard Jabach, before moving to Louis XIV's Château de Versailles and then to the Louvre in 1792. The identity of the model depicted remains unknown. Hourtiq has suggested identifying Girolamo Adorno, mentioned in a letter sent by Pietro Aretino to Federico Gonzaga in 1527. Mayer, to whom we owe the most accepted dating of around 1523, spoke of Giambattista Malatesta, Gonzaga's agent in Venice. Another hypothesis is that it refers to Ferrante Gonzaga, who was sixteen in 1523. Titian painted another picture entitled Portrait of a Man, known as Man with a Glove. Originally belonging to the Louvre and transferred to the Palais Fesch in Ajaccio in 1956, this one is slightly smaller and, despite a few similarities, such as the glove worn on the left hand and the colour of the clothes, the two men seem to belong to different worlds, given the details of their helmets.
