Pommes et biscuits

Pomes i galetes (Apples and Biscuits) is a 45 × 55 cm oil on canvas painted by Paul Cézanne around 1880 and now in the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris. This still life is considered to be one of Cézanne's finest works, "one of those that best sums up", according to Michel Hoog, "the essential features of his art and of his most serious period". For Cézanne, the pure form of the poma was as much a poetic symbol as it was a symbol of his close friendship with Émile Zola, who once gave Cézanne a few models as a thank-you for a favour. This work is generally dated to around 1880. A similar wallpaper is found in various works by Cézanne between 1879 and 1882 (an identical paper appears in a portrait dated around 1882). On the occasion of the sale of the Cognacq collection in 1952, Domenica Walter acquired the painting for what was then considered an unprecedented sum, causing great excitement in the art world. This painting is one of Paul Cézanne's most brilliant works and an example of his great mastery of still life painting. Here, Cézanne has created a very balanced composition with a single panel and a few small pieces arranged on a sack. The painting, of perfect simplicity, consists of three horizontal panels of equal size: the front of a green bag, the lid of the same bag, in shades of blue and brown, and the back wall, covered with blue-green wallpaper. A few green and brown pomes and a blue plate (which is carved along the edge of the canvas) are arranged in mock disorder [...]
