Portrait de deux fillettes

Portrait de deux fillettes is a painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir dating from 1890-1892 and housed at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris. In the 1890s, Renoir painted many double portraits of girls or young women doing some kind of work together: reading, laughing, picking flowers, playing the piano... The two girls pictured here appear in several of these works, notably the version of Girls at the Piano in the Walter-Guillaume collection. In this oil on canvas (46.5 x 55 cm), Renoir takes pleasure in contrasting the colours of the dresses and the shades of the hair of the two young girls. The red-haired girl on the left is depicted in profile, her beard high and conversing with her brunette companion, who is showing most of her face, her head bowed and wearing a hair clip. The attitude and faces of these two girls can be seen in several of Renoir's paintings, as can the green curtain in the background. This oil was painted around the same time as Girls at the Piano (also on show at the Musée de l'Orangerie). The models in the two paintings are probably the same. Renoir shows a predilection for a certain type of woman: a face with wide eyes, a small nose and hair that has not yet lost its roundness, and which he paints with clarity. All this points to the influence of the portraits by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres [...]
