Portrait of Eleanor of Toledo and Her Son Jean de Medici

The Portrait of Eleanor of Toledo and her Son is a painting by the Italian artist Agnolo di Cosimo, better known as Bronzino. Executed around 1545, it is one of his most famous works. Housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, it is considered to be one of the most important examples of Mannerist portraiture. The painting depicts Eleonora of Toledo, wife of Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, seated with her hand on the shoulder of one of her sons. This gesture, and the pattern of her dress, allude to her role as mother. Eléonore is wearing a heavy black brocade dress, decorated with arabesques. In this pose, she is depicted as the ideal Renaissance woman. The painting is the first known state-commissioned portrait to include the heir. By including the child, Cosimo I wanted to signify that his line would bring stability to the duchy. The child has been variously identified as Eleonora's son, Francesco (born 1541), Giovanni (born 1543) or Garzia (born 1547). If the subject is the latter, the portrait must be dated around 1550-53, but the date is now generally attributed to 1545, based on examination of the evolution of Bronzino's style"; it would therefore be Giovanni." The portrait has been described as "cold", reflecting the sobriety of Eleonora, a native of the Spanish Court, without the warmth usually expected of a portrait of mother and child.
