Saint Thomas

The Apostle Saint Thomas ((es) Santo Tomás) in the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Orléans (Loiret, France) is an oil painting attributed to Diego Velázquez, belonging to his early period and painted in Seville between 1618 and 1620. The painting has been in the Musée d'Orléans since at least 1843, when it was attributed to Murillo. In 1925, Manuel Gómez-Moreno declared it a work by Vélásquez, comparing it with Saint Paul in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona (Spain), with a similar inscription in the upper part, the remains of a possible apostle, a series to which the Apostle's Head in the Prado Museum in Madrid (Spain) could also belong. Although it is not possible to establish a direct relationship with the present painting, whose provenance was unknown until it entered the museum, we can nevertheless recall a series of apostles mentioned by Antonio Ponz in his 1772 Journey to Spain, which he located in a room adjoining the prioral cell of the Cartuja de las Cuevas in Seville, paintings that he attributed to the painter. Along with Democritus (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rouen), it is the only Velásquez painting to be conserved in a French museum. The work, whose legibility was impaired by overpainting and dirty varnish, was restored in 2018 by Cinzia Pasquali. The saint is shown in profile, which makes it more difficult to imagine that it is part of a series with the Saint Paul of Barcelona in a near frontal position.
