The Harvesters

The Harvest or Harvesters is a painting by Pieter Brueghel the Elder in 1565. It is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is part of a series of 6 paintings on the seasons. The harvest period is clearly defined and corresponds to the month of August in all Flemish calendars. But as the painting clearly shows an abundance of ripe fruit, we are undoubtedly in the presence of a representation of August and September. The latter, generally known as the month of fruit, was also depicted as such. From the closest shot to the most remote part of the landscape, Brueghel the Elder punctuates his depiction of midsummer with a number of ancillary scenes: a jug resting in the cool shade of the wheat, two quails flying away, frightened by the noise of the reapers, three maids carrying sheaves of wheat towards the harvest cart, a pond with bathers and, at the back, an orchard flanked on the right by a village pasture where players are [...]
