The Incredulity of St. Thomas

The Incredulity of Saint Thomas (in Italian Incredulità di San Tommaso) is a painting by Caravaggio, painted around 1603 and now in the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam. The painting was commissioned by the Marquis Vincenzo Giustiniani (along with Saint Matthew and the Angel in its first version) during Caravaggio's Roman period, after he had left the Palazzo Madama and the protection of Cardinal del Monte. The painting is in the royal collections of Prussia. Kept in Potsdam, it remained intact after the Second World War. It is Caravaggio's most copied painting: twenty-two copies are known from the 17th century. According to the texts (Gospel according to John) and Christian iconography, Thomas, the only apostle not to have witnessed the first return of the risen Christ, doubts that the man in front of him is Jesus, crucified and bruised by the Five Glaciers, and at Jesus' command ("Put your finger here, and look at my hands"; "Put your hand here, too, and put it in my side"), touches the gaping wound in his side with his fingers". Against a dark background typical of Caravaggio's style, three figures dressed in red on the right are seen partially leaning towards Christ: in the foreground, Saint Thomas, leaning heavily with his left arm resting on his hip, reveals only his torso, another apostle behind him his head alone and his upper arm and shoulder, the third appears only by the top of his face, his skull illuminated by the light coming from the left of the painting on the [...]
