The Lacemaker (De kantwerkster) is a painting by Johannes Vermeer, painted between 1669 and 1671 and exhibited in the Musée du Louvre in Paris (oil on canvas, 24.5 × 21 cm). The painting shows a lace-maker absorbed in her work. The young girl stands out against a white wall, probably because the artist sought to eliminate all distractions around the central image. A young woman, whose figure stands out against a neutral background in shades of grey, is seated at a table, next to a book that is almost certainly a bible"; a sewing cushion (naaikussen), from which threads protrude, can be seen on the left of the image ;" The white thread used by the lace-maker is painted with extreme precision by Vermeer, a finesse that contrasts with the impression of vagueness that emanates from the painting. As with his paintings The Astronomer (1668) and The Geographer (1669), it is clear that Vermeer undertook meticulous study before executing the work, the art of lacemaking being depicted here with great precision. As with some of his other works, he probably used a darkroom: many of the optical effects typical of photography can be seen, particularly the blurring of the foreground. By blurring certain areas of the painting, Vermeer suggests depth of field in a way that was unusual for Dutch Baroque painting at the time.
