The Transfiguration

The Transfiguration is the last painting by Raphael, begun in 1518 and unfinished by his own hand in 1520, the year of his death. It is kept in the Pinacoteca in Vatican City. The Transfiguration was commissioned from Raphael by Cardinal Julius de' Medici (the future Pope Clement VII). At the same time, he commissioned a second work entitled The Resurrection of Lazarus from Sebastiano del Piombo. The two altarpieces were intended for his episcopal residence in Narbonne, of which he had been archbishop since 1515. Raphael died of a fever in April 1520, but did not have time to complete the painting. It was therefore left to his workshop (probably Giulio Romano). Cardinal Julius de' Medici finally donated the painting to the church of San Pietro in Montorio in Rome, where it remained on display from 1523 to 1797. Pope Pius VI was forced to cede it to France in 1797 under the Treaty of Tolentino (the treaty, imposed on the Holy See by the French Directoire, involved, among other things, taking one hundred works from the papal and Roman collections). It was then transferred to the Museum Central des Arts, now the Musée du Louvre, before being returned to Pope Pius VII following the fall of Napoleon and the decisions imposed on France by the Congress of Vienna in 1815. In 1817, the famous painting was returned to the Holy See and became part of the Vatican Pinacoteca in 1820. The painting has two distinct narrative sections. The upper part shows the Transfiguration on Mount [...]
