Andrea Alciato

Andrea Alciato (1492-1550) was an Italian jurist and writer. He is regarded as the founder of the French school of legal humanists. Emblemata, published from 1531, is his most famous work. A collection of latin verses illustrated with woodcuts, it inspired the ‘emblem book’ which subseauently became very popular throughout Europe.
