Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) was a French illustrator and painter.
Although Daumier lead a relatively unremarkable life, his illustrations pay witness to the tumultuous history of his era. He lived through six different regimes : the Empire, the Restoration, the July Monarchy, the Second Republic, the Second Empire and the Third Republic. His painting career did not start until 1848, when he painted La République nourrissant ses enfants et les instruisant, from which point his work became much more successful and he received many official commissions. He is perhaps most famous for his caricatures satirising the politicians of his time.
