Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was a Norwegian artist, whose work is associated by art historians with the Symbolist and Expressionist movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Munch studied at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania (now Oslo) where he experimented with many styles. It was after years of study and travels to Paris and Berlin that Munch defined his personal style. His works anticipated the shift from a concern with Realism to a more subjective and introspective approach to painting that took place in Europe at the turn of the century. The subjects Munch treated were often existential in character, from anxiety to love and death ; he aimed to express the subtleties of the interior states of human being. This he managed particularly in his most famous work The Scream , of which he made several copies in paint and pastel between 1893 and 1910.
