Léon Spilliaert ( 1881-1946) was a Belgian symbolist artist. He was largely self taught, proving his talents as a draughtsmen from a very young age. He worked for the publisher and collector Edmond Deman who encouraged the young Spilliaert and introduced him to the poet Emile Verhaeren in Paris in 1904. Spilliaert slowly built up his reputation through local exhibitions and was a founding member of the Sélection group in Brussels. His subjects varied from landscapes of his home town Ostend to still lives and self portraits. Many of his masterpieces are now in the Musée d’Orsay.
