Hippolyte Flandrin (1809-1864) was a French painter and student of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres.
His work exemplifies Ingres influence in its neoclassical style. After studying under Ingres from 1829, Flandrin went on to win the Prix de Rome in 1832 which not only removed the restraints of poverty on his potential but allowed him the chance to study and paint in Rome for five years. Here he took his foundations from Ingres and developed them into a more modern version of Ingres' neoclassicism. Flandrin was also a celebrated portraitist and is considered one of the finest religious painters of the nienteenth century.
