The Triumph of Chastity or Double Portrait of the Dukes of Urbino is a double-sided diptych by Piero della Francesca, painted between 1465 and 1472. It is a tempera on wood, now in the Uffizi Museum in Florence, depicting Frederick III of Montefeltro and his second wife Battista Sforza. Piero della Francesca's first recorded visit to Urbino dates back to spring 1469. He visited the court at the request of Giovanni Santi, court painter and father of Raphael, who had been asked to find an artist to complete the Corpus Domini altarpiece begun by Paolo Uccello. The Flemish painter Juste from Ghent won the contract. On the central panel of the altarpiece, which depicts the Last Supper, he depicts Frederic of Montefeltro, Battista Sforza and two courtiers. Piero then returned to Urbino, where he ended his career in the Duke's service. In 1478, a last document mentions his presence in the duchy, and mentions that he was old and blind at the time. The diptych was commissioned by Frederick III in the year of his marriage, supposedly for commemorative or glorifying purposes, and was intended for his library. It was delivered in the year of the duchess's 26th birthday, the year of her death and the birth of her only son and seventh child. Historians still debate the dating of the diptych, and some suggest that Battista Sforza's sudden death in July 1472 and his Florentine triumph may have prompted the prince to commission his portrait and that of his wife.
