Femmes au jardin, à Ville d'Avray

Women in the Garden is a painting by the painter Claude Monet dating from around 1866. It is kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The painting was acquired by Frédéric Bazille from the painter and remained in his collection until his death during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. His father, Gaston Bazille, sold it to Édouard Manet in exchange for Frédéric Bazille peignant à son chevalet, painted in 1867 by Auguste Renoir and given to him by Manet after the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876. Before producing Femmes au jardin, Monet had already taken an interest in the motif of white dresses in a summer garden in several canvases: Monet settled near the Ville d'Avray station in the spring of 1866, where he rented a small house. After having great difficulty with his Déjeuner sur l'herbe project, mainly because of the size of the canvas, he decided to make smaller paintings that would be easier to conceal in the face of the threat of seizure. His financial worries eased somewhat with the renewed support of his aunt, Lecadre, who was reassured by her nephew's more modest ambitions. Meanwhile, the Salon of 1866 was taking place, and Monet's painting Camille ou La Femme à la robe verte was a great success. He made a number of sales, which brought him some money. Buoyed by this encouragement, Monet embarked on Femmes au Jardin, whose size was reminiscent of his earlier unfinished project. He had to dig a trench to be able to work on the motif.
