Hôtel des Roches Noires was painted by the Impressionist painter Claude Monet in Trouville-sur-Mer in 1870. With the advent of the railways and seaside resorts in the 19th century, the beaches of Normandy became easily accessible to the Parisian bourgeoisie. Luxury hotels sprang up all along the coast, including the Hôtel des Roches Noires, frequented by celebrities such as Gustave Flaubert and Marcel Proust. The choice of subject was directly influenced by Eugène Boudin, and his famous seaside representations of the upper middle classes of the Second Empire. On 28 June 1870, Claude Monet married Camille, who had given him a son, Jean, in 1867. With war looming in 1870 and the painter destitute and homeless in Paris, the Monet family left the capital and stayed in Trouville-sur-Mer before heading to London. As they could not afford to stay in a palace, they took board at the Hôtel de Tivoli, further from the beach. There, Monet painted plein-air canvases depicting rich middle-class people, potential buyers of his paintings. Monet's work, which became the property of the French state following a donation in 1947, has been part of the permanent collection of the Musée d'Orsay since the museum opened in 1986. The canvas is open on one side to the sea, and closed on the other by the façade of the hotel, whose windows and staircase are filled with figures who seem to be admiring the spectacle of the tide.
