Nonchaloir

Nonchaloir (Repose) is a painting created by John Singer Sargent in 1911 and now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D. C. This oil on canvas (63.8 × 76.2 cm) has been in the National Gallery of Art since 1948. It came from the collection of Curt H. Relsinger. In the 1900s, despite his success as a portrait painter in the last years of the Victorian period, Sargent broke away from pictorial conventions to experiment with new, more imaginative forms. The woman resting on the sofa is his own niece, Rose-Marie Ormond (1893-1918), daughter of Mrs Francis Ormond and later married to Robert Michel. This portrait, far from being traditional, shows Rose-Marie in a languid, dreamy attitude, like an almost anonymous silhouette.
