The Virgin and Child in Majesty surrounded by Six Angels

La Maestà (or The Virgin and Child in Majesty surrounded by six angels) is a tempera on wood, a religious painting by Cimabue, one of his Maestàs produced in the 13th century, around 1280. It is kept at the Musée du Louvre in Paris and was confiscated as a prize of war in 1813 by Napoleon I during the occupation of Italy. The painting, originally in the Church of San Francesco in Pisa, was looted by Napoleon's troops and taken to Paris by Jean Baptiste Henraux, who was interested in French collections of early Italian paintings. Despite the restitutions made to the countries of origin, this painting is one of those large ones that cannot be transported without damage. It therefore remained in the Louvre. The theme is religious. The meaning of the title is given by Cennino Cennini in his Treatise on Painting: for him, a figure seen from the front is said to be "in majesty". From the 4th century onwards, Christ was represented in this way, but in the 13th century, with the intensification of the Marian cult, it was the Virgin who was represented "in majesty", and who became the "Majesty" by antonomasia. A Maestà is therefore a representation of the Virgin and Child in Majesty, either from the front, in a hieratic attitude, on a throne, surrounded by angels and the holy apostles. The Virgin, with the Child Jesus in her arms, seated on a large architectural throne, is surrounded by her heavenly court of angels.
