The Battle of Castillon, 17 July 1453 is a painting by Charles-Philippe Larivière, painted in 1839. It is one of the works in the Battle Gallery at the Château de Versailles in France. The Battle of Castillon is an oil on canvas, 4.25 m high and 2.62 m long. It depicts John Talbot, an Englishman, falling from his horse during the Battle of Castillon in 1453, the last battle of the Hundred Years' War. This painting contains a number of errors. Talbot, aged 70, was not wearing armour and his horse was white. The painting is located in the Battle Gallery at the Château de Versailles. As the paintings in the gallery are arranged in chronological order, it is placed between those depicting the siege of Orleans (1429) and Charles VIII's entry into Naples (1495). Commissioned by Louis-Philippe for the Musée Historique de Versailles in 1837, and exhibited at the Salon of 1839 under no. 1224, Alexandre Barbier wrote the following review of this painting:; "Do you remember, dear reader, a great and beautiful painting which appeared at the Salon of 1836, representing the king arriving at the Hôtel-de-Ville through the barricades of July still standing? It was by M. Larivière. I need to evoke this memory to justify what remains for me to say. Weapons are a daily occurrence! It's a long way from the picture I'm recalling to the two battles we have before us"; I'm afraid Mr Larivière lost them both... But let us not criticise too harshly a man who has already given us such complete proof [...]
