Bathing on the Beach

Leaving the Bath is a work by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida in oil on canvas measuring 130 x 150.50 cm. It is dated, according to his signature, 1915 and is currently in the Sorolla Museum in Madrid. It was painted in June 1915, in Valencia, during a break from his work for the Hispanic Society of America. The same period includes such notable works as Niña entrando en el baño ("Girl entering the bath"), painted in the summer of the same year. Leaving the bath on the beach was a recurring theme for Sorolla, and there are several works with similar content and the same title that have been very well received by critics and the public alike. In fact, this painting was exhibited on numerous occasions: " In 1929, when Sorolla died, the painting became part of his bequest to his wife Clotilde and is now kept in the Sorolla Museum, although it has retained its itinerant character and has been included in various exhibitions in recent times. In the foreground, occupying almost the entire composition, is an almost full-length woman holding a child just out of the water, wrapped in a white cloth. In the background, with the exception of a small upper strip of sky and a lower strip of sand, the absolute protagonist is the sea: "The work is dominated by vivid blue-white tones, applied with a full, agile and loose brushstroke that evokes the clear light of the Valencian [...]
