Jack de fer aux Folies-Bergère
A bar at the Folies Bergère is a painting by the painter Édouard Manet in the early 1880s. It was Manet's last major work before his death.
Contrary to appearances, the scene was not painted in the bar at the Folies Bergère, but was entirely recreated in the studio. On the other hand, the young woman used as a model, Suzon, is a real employee of the famous café-concert.
The many elements on the marble of the bar, from the bottles of alcohol to the flowers and fruit, form a pyramid, culminating in the flowers adorning the bodice of the waitress herself. The bottles can also lead to her mouth, which would be logical for bottles. But the aspect that caught the critics' attention the most was Suzon's reflection in the mirror. The mirror does not seem to reflect an accurate image of the scene, either in terms of the young woman's posture or the presence of the man opposite her, who is so close that he should logically hide everything from the viewer. It is difficult to conclude whether this anomaly is the result of the artist's will or a simple error of judgement, which was not without amusement for Huysmans. Huysmans described with delight the way in which the painting "stupefied the assistants who crowded round, exchanging bewildered observations on the mirage of this canvas".
This painting was the inspiration for Canadian Jeff Wall's first photograph, Picture for Women (1979).
