Labourage nivernais : le sombrage
Ploughing in the Nivernais, also known as Sombrage, is an oil painting on canvas (133 × 206 cm) produced in 1849 by Rosa Bonheur and now in the Musée d'Orsay.
The painting depicts the first ploughing, also known as sombrage. On a hilly plain, two teams of six oxen pull the ploughs to turn the soil in the field.
The painting is described by Léonce Bénédite in Les Chefs d'oeuvre du Musée du Luxembourg: "In the clear light of morning, under a soft blue sky, two teams of six superb white and red oxen (...), spurred on by their drivers, are each pulling, one behind the other, a plough whose share is splitting the brown earth into regular clods. In the background, on the right, a plain cut by clumps of trees"; on the left, a small wooded hill where the roof of a farm can be seen through the thick foliage";".
The French government commissioned Rosa Bonheur to paint Labourage nivernais in oil in 1848 for a museum in Lyon, and bought it for 20,000 francs. Sources differ as to where it was painted: in Beaumont-Sardolles, in the Nièvre, according to some, or rue de l'Ouest in Paris according to the artist herself in her Souvenirs. In the end, the State preferred to keep it in Paris at the Musée du Luxembourg from 1849 to 1920. After Rosa Bonheur's death, the work was transferred to the Louvre, where it remained from 1920 to 1923. From 1923 to 1986, it was on deposit at the Musée National du Château de Fontainebleau. The painting joined the collections of the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
