Le Couronnement de la Vierge

The Coronation of the Virgin is a work by the painter Fra Angelico, painted around 1430 in Fiesole (Florence). The painting, painted on a single panel of poplar wood, is 2.09 m high and 2.06 m wide. The scene illustrates the theme of the Coronation of the Virgin, very common in the 13th century and spread by Jacques de Voragine's Golden Legend. Mary kneels before her Son, who crowns her Queen of Heaven. Nine polychrome marble steps lead up to the throne, on which Christ sits beneath a ciborium. Around them, several figures are grouped together. They include Louis IX with his fleur-de-lys crown, Nicholas of Myre, wearing a mitre on his head and an embroidered cope, Mary Magdalene dressed in red, her hair down and holding a vase of perfume, Catherine of Alexandria with the wheel of her martyrdom and Saint Agnes clasping a lamb in her arms. Musicians and apostles and evangelists, whose names are inscribed on the halo, also surround the scene. The composition follows a pyramidal plan, with the heavenly throne at the apex and the kneeling saints on either side of the base. Care is taken to position the figures so that they are all visible. The tiled floor is painted according to the rules of perspective, with vanishing lines emphasised by Mary Magdalene's vase. The same concern for perspective can be seen in the scenes on the predella.
