Le verrou
Le Verrou (The Lock) is a scene traditionally considered to be gallant, representing the beginnings of a relationship (perhaps not consensual), painted by Jean-Honoré Fragonard in 1777. It is one of the painter's most famous works, and a veritable benchmark of eighteenth-century painting. The common interpretation suggests that the scene depicts two lovers embracing in a bedroom, with the man pushing the bolt on the door. A more objective interpretation, on the other hand, suggests a depiction of rape. The woman is shown trying to extricate herself from the man's arms. The man locking the woman in the room.
The painting is in the Musée du Louvre, in the Paintings department, in the section devoted to 18th-century French painting, on the second floor of the Sully wing. Here, it stands alongside some of the greatest masterpieces of painting from the same period, in a chronologically organised exhibition.
This painting, a veritable symbol of the libertine spirit of the 18th century, reflects the state of mind adopted by painters of the period, particularly François Boucher, one of Fragonard's masters and a leading exponent of rococo painting.
The work was commissioned in 1773 by Louis-Gabriel Véri-Raionard, Marquis de Véri (1722-1785).
