The Surrender of Breda or The Spears ((es) La rendición de Breda o Las lanzas) is an oil on canvas painted between 1634 and 1635 by Diego Velázquez and exhibited at the Prado Museum in Madrid since 1819.
Velázquez's work takes as its historical backdrop the Eighty Years' War, or War of Flanders, fought by the Netherlands, under the leadership of William of Orange, to free itself from the yoke of Spain in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
In 1590, the troops of Maurice de Nassau-Orange, fourth son of William, Stathouder of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, captured the town of Bréda. "A twelve-year truce kept the country at peace between 1609 and 1621. When Philip IV acceded to the Spanish throne in 1621, the truce expired and the war resumed. Philip IV wanted to recover this important place as a starting point for further conquests."
Philip IV appointed Ambrogio Spinola general of the Breda expedition. This Genoese aristocrat was the best military strategist of the time. He took command of 40,000 men and a number of renowned Spanish generals, such as the Marquis of Leganés and don Carlos Coloma.
The city of Bréda was defended by Justin de Nassau, of the House of Orange. The siege of the city was a real lesson in military strategy, closely observed and studied by the foreign generals who were there as "military attachés".
